We recently came across an interesting memory foam mattress from a great American mattress company, so naturally we just had to write up a big review to tell you about it. The PuraSleep CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress packs 10 inches of cooling, comfortable and energy absorbing foam; but how does it hold up to our Zen Sleeping Tests? Read on to find out.

            Quick FAQ

The PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress (Queen) is going for less than $370 on Amazon.

If you order the Queen, it will come shipped in an Amazon box weighing roughly 65-70 lbs and with dimensions 21” x 20” x 40”.

The top layer contains 2.5 inches of CoolFlow memory foam and has a density of 2 lb pcf.

Comfort is a very subjective metric that changes a lot from person to person. That being said, we believe the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow will have a medium firmness for back-sleeping males weighing over 180lb, medium-hard firmness for back-sleeping women weighing over 150lbs, and basically a medium-hard to hard firmness for everyone else.

If you don’t prefer mattresses with medium-hard to hard firmness, then the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress will be too firm for you out of the box. Luckily, you can make the mattress much softer (at least a medium firmness) very easily – we even have a section to show you how.

Yes, it comes with a luxurious washable cotton cover.

Based on our questionnaires of current owners of this mattress, the PuraSleep 10-inch memory foam mattress will likely have a medium odor out of the box.

Unpacking the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress

The Queen-size version of the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress comes shipped in an Amazon box weighing roughly 65-70 lbs and with dimensions 21” x 20” x 40”. Once you open the box, you will notice the mattress is rolled up and packed in an airtight plastic bag.

TIP: Open the mattress in a room that is currently unoccupied, well-ventilated and receives a good amount of sunlight per day. When mattresses are first opened out of their vacuum-sealed bags, they immediately start to expand and typically give off a “new memory foam” smell which can sometimes be quite strong and bothersome. Letting the mattress air out and expand in a ventilated room for a few days is the best way to get rid of the smell. Also, don’t sleep on it during this period of time, or place any sheets or mattress protectors over it.

Where Was The PuraSleep 10-inch Made?

The great American folks over at Luxe Foam are the culprits behind the PuraSleep 10-inch. Not only are they a US-based business, but all their products are also manufactured in the USA… Georgia, to be exact. This practically guarantees that the mattress has been produced with quality and safety in mind.

Is It Made From Safe Materials?

Luxe Foam, the company behind PuraSleep matresses, is CertiPUR-US certified, which means their mattresses are :certipur

            – Made without ozone depletes
            – Made without PBDE flame retardants
            – Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy materials
            – Made without phthalates regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission
            – Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality

            Thickness & Density

The PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow memory foam mattress consists of 2 layers in total. This is arguably the best thickness-to-layer combination, and here’s why: the more layers a memory foam mattress has, the higher the potential that the mattress will feel more unstable when changing positions or just moving around on it. Therefore, to ensure the lowest amount of motion transfer on a typical memory foam mattress, we usually prefer a mattress to have a maximum of 2 layers. This does not necessarily mean that all 3-layered mattresses will be unstable; it only increases the likelihood that the mattress will eventually become unstable, especially if there are two regular sleepers on it.

The top layer of the PuraSleep 10-inch is 2.5 inches thick, has a density of 2 lb pcf and is made from CoolFlow memory foam. The thickness is not bad (we generally recommend anywhere between 2-4 inches); the density, on the other hand, is a bit low. At Zen Sleeping we like to recommend top-layer densities of 2.5 lb pcf and higher, so a density of 2 lb pcf is a bit on the low side. What does this mean exactly, though?

            PuraSleep Breakdown

The density of a memory foam mattress’s top layer is an indication of its durability over time. It has little to nothing to do with how firm the feel of that layer is. Instead, it has more to do with how much “springiness” the layer has. The higher the density of the memory foam top layer, the faster it will “spring” back into shape after being laid on, and the longer it will be able to maintain its general shape and springiness over time. Does a 2 lb pcf density top layer mean this mattress is crap? Not at all, it just means that it’s slightly less dense than what we generally prefer. If you are thinking of purchasing this mattress and the combined weight of you and your partner will be less than 350 lbs, this density should be more than good enough.

The PuraSleep 10-inch’s bottom layer is 7.5 inches thick and made from high density core layer foam, which is just fancy talk for high-density foam. This is standard practice for most memory foam mattresses: the bottom layer will always have a much higher density than the top layers. For this reason, DO NOT flip this mattress over from time to time; it is meant to be used with the top layer, well, on top!

            Smell

Brand new memory foam mattresses can tend to be accompanied by a “new memory foam smell”, and even the same brand of mattress purchased separately can smell widely different. To give you a better idea of the strength of the “typical” odor of the PuraSleep 10-inch memory foam mattress, we contacted 100 current owners and asked them two questions: 1) How much did the mattress smell upon first opening, and 2) How long did it take for the smell to go away?

            Here’s what we found out:

            • No Smell - 14%
            • Light odor, gone in 3 days - 36%
            • Mild odor, gone in 5 days - 45%
            • Strong odor, gone in 7 days - 5%

So around 50% of all purchasers noted either no smell or a light odor, but around 45% noticed a medium odor. This is pretty good, as we usually prefer to see that 75-80% of the distribution was from light to medium odors. However, in this case, it was surprising that 45% were attributed to medium-strength odors alone… that’s pretty high!

The better news is that only 5% of purchasers noticed a strong smell, and that smell nearly dissipated within a week. So all good there!

Verdict: most likely, your new memory foam mattress will be accompanied by a medium odor. This news isn’t too bad; just keep it in a well-ventilated room for a week before setting it up on a base and fitting sheets over it.

            Feel & Firmness

As always, before delving into this topic we like to remind our readers that feel, firmness, and the general comfort level of any mattress differs a lot from person to person. While using weight and gender can provide logical guidelines for us to follow, there will always be 100 lb females who love super-firm mattresses and 300 lb males who can’t get enough of extremely plushy and soft surfaces. To make things as holistic as possible here at Zen Sleeping, we use our own professional opinion as well as curated responses from over 100 verified purchasers who sleep on the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress every night.

            ILD Rating

As of the date of this post, the manufacturer has not updated us with the ILD rating of the mattress. We will provide the ILD rating here as soon as we figure it out.

            Feel & Firmness Test

After thoroughly testing out the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress here’s what we found out:

If you are a male back sleeper and weigh over 180lb, the mattress should have roughly a medium firmness. Female back sleepers weighing over 150lb will find that the mattress feels medium-hard. On the other hand, if you are below these weights for either gender, the PuraSleep 10-inch will most likely have a firmness somewhere between medium-hard and hard.

For those of you who prefer to sleep on their sides and/ or stomachs however, the PuraSleep 10-inch will probably feel too firm. If you’re a side sleeper who generally dislikes mattresses with hard firmness, check out our section below on making the PuraSleep 10-inch feel softer.

            Our Verified Purchasers Weigh In

To supplement our professional opinions on comfort level, feel and firmness, we have data points on over 100 verified purchasers of the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress. Here’s what they had to say:

            • Comfortable feel - 75%
            • Too firm - 23%
            • Too soft - 2%

75% of our verified purchasers found the mattress to be a comfortable sleeping experience. 23% believe it is too firm, and 2% too soft.

Verdict: for back sleepers, the PuraSleep 10-inch memory foam mattress could be a good fit for you as long as you are 150lbs+ as a woman or 180lbs+ as a man. If you are lighter in weight and typically shy away from firm mattresses, it would be best to either purchase a mattress topper with this mattress or look elsewhere altogether.

How To Make the PuraSleep 10-inch Softer

There’s a common misconception going around that firm mattresses can never be altered to feel softer; this is patently false and should be put to rest once and for all. In fact, there’s one very easy solution to making any mattress softer: placing a mattress topper on top.

If you currently own a firm mattress or believe the PuraSleep 10-inch could be a good fit but want to ensure that you’ll sleep comfortably on it, just simply buy a 2-inch thick mattress topper (preferably memory foam to keep it consistent) and place it on top. There’s one important aspect here, though: make sure the density of the memory foam mattress topper is less than 3 lb pcf. The lower the density of the topper, the less springy it will be over time, which will ensure a softer surface and a downgrade in firmness (typically from medium-hard to medium, etc).

Our recommendation: the Red Nomad 2-inch memory foam topper. You can check out our review here, or view it on Amazon here.

            Durability

How can you tell if a mattress will be durable and last long? Well, there are 4 main things to look for: adequate density, high-quality garment construction, resistance to surface/ edge abrasions, and stain release capabilities. In this section we dive into each of these factors.

            Density

The density of a memory foam mattress’s top layer is arguably the most important factor in determining how long it will last. Mattresses with low memory foam density will literally “give out” and start sinking in a few months to a year, so we can’t stress enough the importance of density.

With a density of 2 lb pcf, the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam mattress is a bit on the low side. This won’t have severe implications on the durability of your mattress as long as the combined weight placed on the mattress every night is less than 350 lbs. Any more and you risk the mattress losing its durability and starting to sag/ sink faster than normal.

            Garment Construction

Garment construction refers to how resistant the mattress cover and actual mattress are to tearing at the sides, seams, and edges. Since we haven’t had enough time with the PuraSleep to effectively test this, we turned to our 100 verified purchasers, most of whom have owned the mattress for more than 4 months. Here’s what they had to say:

99% reported no tears of the mattress foam, and 94% reported no tears of the mattress cover. We’d also like to note that the cotton cover is removable/ machine washable, as well as antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, dust mite, mold, and mildew inhibiting.

            Surface / Edge Abrasion

A durable mattress will be more resistant to surface and edge abrasions; these basically occur from the repeated rubbing of the mattress/ cover surface to sheets, your body, etc over many nights of use. When asked about the PuraSleep 10-inch’s ability to withstand day-to-day usage, our 100 verified purchasers had this to say:

95% reported no wearing of the mattress cover surface, and 98% reported no surface or edge abrasions of the foam material.

            Stain Release

Lastly, a mattress and cover are more durable when they are better able to release stains. Of the 100 verified purchasers, 14 had experienced stains on the mattress at some point. Of those 14 cases, the stains were easily removed for 100% of them.

            Verdict

The PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress performed average to above-average in our durability tests. Using the data gathered, we believe the average lifespan of the mattress to be 5 years.

Total points awarded for Durability: 17 / 20

            Heat Regulation

Memory foam mattresses are sometimes synonymous with “sleeping hot”, mainly because these days mattress manufacturers use cheaper foam materials which don’t allow proper breathability, essentially trapping a person’s body heat in the mattress while they’re sleeping. If you’ve ever tried sleeping on a memory foam mattress and woken up in a puddle of sweat in the middle of the night, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Well, how does the PuraSleep 10-inch CoolFlow Memory Foam Mattress fare with regard to heat regulation? It does have “CoolFlow” in the name, and the top layer is supposedly constructed using a patented “coolflow” foam, so it must be guaranteed to regulate heat amazingly right? Let’s see!

We turn again to our handy 100 verified purchasers for more color on this issue. We basically asked how hot the PuraSleep 10-inch mattress sleep for each individual, and this is what we found out:

            • Slept cool - 35%
            • Slept neutral - 60%
            • Slept warm - 3%
            • Slept hot - 2%

Amazing – absolutely amazing. 95% of sleepers noted either sleeping cool or neutral, which is the best score any mattress has received thus far in our reviews.

Total points awarded for Heat Regulation: 20 / 20
