            Pros

            • Made in USA
            • CertiPUR certified
            • Medium soft feel
            • 3 layers of foam

            Cons

            • New memory foam smell; may require airing

To put it bluntly, the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” is an absolute steal. The mattress features three different foam layers to balance comfort, heat regulation, and support. As a 200lb male, I did not sink much, and it had a good level of “medium soft” without being too “plush”.

            Basic Details

I’m a no non-sense kind of guy, so let’s get right to reviewing.

I went about this review by purchasing the Queen-size bed on January 5, 2016 and testing it out using our Zen Sleeping Scoring System.

I also interviewed 50Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max Memory Foam Mattress verified purchasers of the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” Memory Foam Mattress to get further insight into pros and cons.

            Initial Checks

            1. Where was the memory foam mattress produced?

The Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” Memory Foam Mattress is produced in the USA by Perfect Cloud Mattresses, a company that has been in service for over 10 years. Big pluses here. Perfect Cloud’s customer service was great, as they not only answered all my questions with promptness and professionalism but were also very accommodating.

It’s also important to note that Perfect Cloud uses a factory-to-consumer model, so there is no middleman.

5 / 5 points for this check. Off to a good start!

            2. Is the manufacturer listed on the CertiPUR-US site?

Yes, the manufacturer is CertiPUR certified, which means the mattress is:

            • Made without ozone depletes
            • Made without PBDE flame retardants
            • Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy materials
            • Made without phthalates regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission
            • Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality

5 / 5 points for this check. I like where this is going…

            3. What is the actual thickness/ density of the memory foam layer?

This mattress is interesting because it offers not one, but two “top” memory foam layers.Perfect Cloud Mattress Breakdown

The first layer is 1.5” thick and made with air-infused memory foam (visco). It also has a 4lb pcf density, so it is quite supportive.

The second layer is 2” thick and comprised of “gel-max” memory foam, which is just the company’s fancy way of saying gel-infused memory foam. Gel memory foam is naturally more firm than visco memory foam due to the gel-infused liquid or beads in the foam. This layer serves to provide additional support but with the added benefit of regulating the mattress temperature.

            5 / 5 points for this check.

            4. What is the actual thickness of the foam in the supporting layers?

The last layer is made with 6.5” of high-density base support foam.

            5 / 5 points baby!

            Feel & Firmness

The Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” Mattress feels quite comfortable.

I normally sleep on my back, and the mattress did a great job of supporting my body without pushing too firmly against my back. I was definitely able to feel the comfort of the 1.5” and 2” top layers, but most importantly the bottom high-density layer prevented my 200lb frame from sinking too low into the mattress. I hate mattresses that sink low.

I then consulted with customers who have owned the mattress for over 5 months, and was glad to find out that the 100% of them have not had any issues with the mattress sinking too low.

On the other hand, there were some customers who complained that the mattress was actually too firm for them. After some further investigation, it seemed that perhaps their low weight (below 130lbs) could be the reason why the mattress felt too firm on their bodies.

Of these customers, 90% of them were able to fix this issue by simply purchasing a memory foam mattress topper. This is completely up to you, though.

My rule of thumb: if you weigh more than 130lbs, the Perfect Cloud Gel-Max 10” will give you a comfortable and supportive sleeping experience without being too firm. If you are below 130 lbs or are very sensitive to firmness, consider trying out the mattress first and/ or purchasing a mattress topper. Luckily the company is super accommodating, so even if you try it out and decide to return it, you should get a full refund and fast turnaround.

            I award the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” a 17 / 20 for Feel.

            Smell

dog-838242_960_720The mattress does have a “new memory foam” smell when you open it for the first time, but this is to be expected of most mattresses. The important factor here is if the smell has a chemical, irritative element to it or not. Luckily, since the Perfect Cloud Ultraplush Gel-Max 10” is CertiPUR certified and does not use unregulated materials, the smell is just the typical “new memory foam” smell. Think of the “new car smell”, but in your house.

After discussing with other customers, I found out that the majority also noted the presence of the “new memory foam” smell, which dissipated after 3-5 days.

            I award 8 / 20 points in this section.

            Heat Regulation

As for heat, I usually test this by setting three alarms throughout the night and taking notes on how hot I feel. For this experiment, I went to bed at 11:30 PM and used enough blankets so that I felt comfortable and not too warm.

1:30 AM: Woke up feeling fine – not cold at all, not too warm, just nice and toasty.

3:30 AM: Woke up feeling a bit hot, but not enough to make me feel uncomfortable.

5:30 AM: Woke up feeling the same as 3:30 AM.

Of the customers I consulted with, 75% did not feel too hot at night, with 15% feeling slightly hot but not uncomfortable, and 10% feeling too hot to get a good night’s sleep. I concluded that this could either be due to personal preferences of heat, or that the mattress itself was defected.

For this section, I award 15 / 20 – I’m a perfectionist, especially when it comes to heat regulation.

            Value & Concluding Thoughts

I truly believe you are getting a pretty good deal, especially when considering how much of a discount you’re getting on this mattress compared to the competition. For value, I give it 10/10 points.

There is a lot to love with the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel-Max 10” Memory Foam Mattress, and very little to hate.

The mattress is made in the USA, is CertiPUR certified, features three different layers including a gel-infused layer to control heat, and features a 25-year warranty from a reputable company that has great customer support.

As a 200lb gentleman, the mattress felt medium soft without feeling too plush, and the majority of customers interviewed had similar experiences. A small minority of customers who were under 130lbs felt the mattress was too firm, but this issue was fixed once they purchased a memory foam mattress topper to place over the mattress. Heat regulation was pretty good for me, but it may get slightly warm for some at night. There is a notable “new memory foam” smell, but that went away after 3-5 days.

Onto the final tally of points…

            1. Initial Checks: 20 / 20

            2. Feel & Firmness: 17 / 20

            3. Smell: 13 / 20

            4. Heat Regulation: 15 / 20

            5. Value: 20 / 20

            TOTAL: 85 / 100

We at Zen Sleeping believe that a mattress with a score of >70 passes our performance standards. With an outstanding score of 85, we believe the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush Gel Max 10” Memory Foam Mattress strikes a great balance between quality, feel, smell, heat regulation, and price/value.
