1. Where was the memory foam mattress produced?

The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress is made in China by DynastyMattress. For those of you who regularly read my reviews, you may skip to the next section. For any first-time readers, however, the following is very important, so please read carefully.

Normally when I see the words “Made in China”, I choose not to perform a product test / write up a review; in other words, it’s a complete deal-breaker for me. The reason is real simple: most memory foam mattress companies who want to cut corners in terms of production costs typically look to have their mattresses made in China. Most of the time, the raw materials used in these mattresses are of mediocre quality at best; at worst, the mattresses could be produced using harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, and worse. On the other hand, mattresses made in the USA and Europe undergo much stricter testing standards, so you will (most likely) be spending your hard-earned cash on products that are 1) of higher quality and 2) not harmful. The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress passes this test even though it’s made in China, and in the next section you will see why.

DynastyMattress also provides a website which provides information about the company as well as a standard FAQ which I found to be so-so. All in all, I will award 4 out of 5 points in this subsection.

2. Is the manufacturer listed on the CertiPUR-US site?

Yes, which means their mattresses are :

– Made without ozone depletes
– Made without PBDE flame retardants
– Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy materials
– Made without phthalates regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission
– Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality

To touch back on the point I made in the previous section, typically mattress manufacturers from China are not CertiPUR certified, and so it is completely impossible to know under what conditions their mattresses are made (and with what materials).
The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, which is very important. 5 out of 5 points for this subsection.

3. What is the actual thickness/ density of the memory foam layer?

The top memory foam layer of the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze consists of 3 inches of gel-infused memory foam carrying a density of 5 lb pcf. A 3-inch top layer is the sweet spot, as I normally like to see a thickness in the range of 2 – 4 inches. The thicker the memory foam layer, the more the mattress should contour to your body, so more doesn’t necessarily have to mean better – it’s up to your personal preference. A big misconception when purchasing memory foam mattresses is that the whole bed will conform to you; that is simply not true, because 99% of memory foam mattresses only have memory foam in the top layer. The consistency of the top layer has been altered by the infusion of gel beads in the memory foam, which serves to ensure adequate airflow through the mattress and the prevention of heat buildup. Normally this also means the mattress will feel firmer than normal, so we wil test for that in the Feel & Firmness section.

The density of the memory foam top layer is higher than what I’m normally used to; the typical range is from 2.5 – 4 lb pcf. This means the mattress will be more supportive and durable, but could also be a bit firmer than standard 3-inch memory foam top layers. Before jumping to the Feel & Firmness section, I have a feeling this mattress will have a medium firmness and be great for back sleepers, but not so much for side and stomach sleepers. Thus far, however, I’m happy with what i’m seeing; I award 5 out of 5 points for the top layer check.

4. What is the actual thickness of the foam in the supporting layers?

I initially thought the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress featured a tri-layered system, which means there are 2 support layers. The middle support layer of this memory foam mattress is 4 inches thick and made with Cool Airflow Foam. That’s quite a lot of thickness for the middle layer, as I normally see middle layers with a thickness of 2-3 inches (and sometimes no middle layer), but upon closer inspection it turned out that this layer is actually 2 separate (but equal) layers; both are 2 inches thick and both are made with the Cool Airflow Foam. The description of the Cool Airflow Foam is interesting, as it seems to indicate that this layer also plays a big role in helping to regulate heat and prevent the sleeper from getting too hot at night. We will see about that later on in the Heat Regulation section.

The bottom layer of the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress is 5 inches thick and made with high density base foam. This is pretty standard as far as base layers go; as long as this layer is at least 4 inches thick and made from high density foam, we’re all good. For this subsection, I’ll award 4 out of 5 points.

Feel & Firmness

To test the feel, firmness, and even the durability of the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress, I take a three step approach. The first step is to sleep on the mattress for 7 nights and take diligent notes on how it feels, how firm it is, how much support I get, etc. After this step, I conduct thorough interviews with 50 verified purchasers or the mattress to get a sense of how other people are experiencing this mattress on a nightly basis. Lastly, I turn to my verified purchasers again to get their opinions on three factors of durability, which provides a lot of great information about how long you can really expect the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch to last.

Medium firmness – back sleepers rejoice

After sleeping on the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress for 7 nights, I have a lot of good things to say. If you’re a back sleeper looking for a mattress with medium to high firmness, this is your perfect match. It took 2 nights for my body to get used to the surface of this mattress, as the top layer is quite dense; the foam definitely conforms to your body, but by no means do you feel yourself sinking in too much or feeling “plushy”. By the third night, I found myself feeling extremely comfortable. I’m naturally a back sleeper, and I rarely switch positions at night; as such, I had a very positive experience on this mattress. My body felt very supported, but not pushed overly hard by the foam; likewise, I did not find myself tossing or turning at all. These are all very positive observations which point to one major conclusion: the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress is a perfect solution for back sleepers.

I believe that side and/ or stomach sleepers may find this mattress too firm, unless they are heavyweight individuals who prefer medium to high firmness mattresses. The top memory foam layer of the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze carries a density of 5 lb pcf, which in my opinion is simply too dense for average or lightweight individuals who prefer to sleep on their side and/ or stomach. Normally side and stomach sleepers feel more comfortable on a sleeping surface that is soft to medium firmness, so initially I don’t think this would be an ideal mattress for them.

To get a better idea of how well the DynastyMattress fared with others, I turned to my 50 verified purchasers for more information. 29 of the 50 total respondents said the mattress has been a very comfortable sleeping surface for them; 19 of those 29 are back sleepers, and 10 are side and/ or stomach sleepers. 14 of the remaining respondents found the mattress to be slightly too firm but still comfortable, while 7 of them believed the mattress was too firm to get a good night’s sleep. My rule of thumb: If you are a back sleeper or are heavyweight, this mattress will feel great for you no matter your preferred sleeping position. Otherwise, I’d suggest going for a memory foam mattress that is softer.

We now move on to our three durability tests, which will hopefully shed some light on how long-lasting the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress has been for our verified purchasers. In order to test durability, we look at three main factors: garment construction, surface / edge abrasion, and stain release. For all of these factors, I will ask in-depth questions of my verified purchasers who have owned this mattress for longer than 6 months. For this review, 24 purchasers fall in this subcategory.

Garment construction refers to how resistant the mattress is to tears at the seams, body and sleeves. The more durable a mattress is, the more resistant it is to these types of tears. 20 respondents noted no visible tears on their mattress, with 2 noting tears of the cover on the sides of the mattress and 2 noting malfunctions of the cover zipper.

Surface / edge abrasion refers to how resistant the memory foam mattress is against wearing away when rubbed against another surface. Since the mattress will be rubbed against your skin, during washing, drying and everything in between, this is an extremely important factor to review. In this case, 19 respondents noted no surface or edge abrasions, and 5 noted slight wears of the areas of the mattress cover which have been used the most (the main surface). The abrasions were all noted as being very slight and cosmetic, and not requiring a return / refund.

Stain release refers to how effectively the mattress can release stains. It’s important for two reasons: durability and aesthetics. A more durable mattress will release stains easier, and a mattress that is more aesthetically pleasing is just… nice! In our case, no respondents noted any stains, so we can’t give a definitive answer here.

We have now tested the feel, firmness, and durability of the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress; I will award 17 out of 20 points in this section.

Smell

Most memory foam mattresses often come out of the box with a “new memory foam” smell, which can range anywhere from lightly distinct to strong and unbearable. Everyone’s experience typically differs a bit, but normally we observe a trend in how much a particular brand of memory foam mattress smells from the responses of our verified purchasers.

In my experience, the DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress had a strong “new memory foam” smell upon initial unpacking. No problem, though – I simply placed the mattress (uncovered and with no sheets over it) in a well-ventilated room until the smell went away. Luckily, it took 3 days for the smell to completely go away. Normally it takes 1-2 days, but I say “lucky” because as you’ll see very soon, some of our verified purchasers had to wait a bit longer. It also helps to let your new memory foam mattress air out in a room that gets direct sunlight for a good part of the day.

Our verified purchasers had some interesting experiences with smell; 30 of them noted a slight, distinct odor that went away between 1 and 3 days, 16 of them noted a strong odor that went away between 1-4 days, and 14 noted a strong odor that went away between 5-8 days. So, I will deduct some points for smell because who likes to wait 8 days before sleeping on their brand new mattress?! 14 out of 20 points here.

I test heat buildup by taking notes during my week-long sleeping test of the mattress; I usually set alarms throughout the night, recording how hot I feel during these periods. In this case, I noted feeling a neutral temperature on average for 6 out of 7 nights. I never observed feeling humid, sticky, or hot. The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-inch has superior heat regulating abilities due to its top memory foam layer which is made of gel-infused memory foam, but also due to the middle double layer of Cool Airflow Foam.
