Welcome back for another memory foam mattress review! Today I’ll be reviewing the Queen-size version of the Best Price Mattress 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress. I performed my test using our standard Zen Sleeping Scoring System, which reviews 5 main categories each worth a possible maximum 20 points: Initial Checks, Feel & Firmness, Smell, Heat Regulation, and Value. However, I definitely recommend you check out the whole review before making any decisions!

I also conducted in-depth questionnaires with over 50 verified purchasers of the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress. These questionnaires will be brought up in almost every section, as I love utilizing some cold-hard statistics to supplement my own professional opinions; these purchasers will have used the mattress for much longer than I can personally test it, so they are a great way to learn about any random hiccups that may arise months or years after purchasing your own. Out of the 50 purchasers, 45 have owned the mattress more than 6 months.

Initial Checks

1. Where was the memory foam mattress produced?

The Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress is made in China by Best Price Mattress and was first released on February 22, 2010. Now, most of you who regularly read my reviews will know that I wouldn’t even go through with a mattress test if it doesn’t pass this first section, so you can skip to the next point since you will know why this mattress made the cut. But, for any first-time readers, the following is very important, so please read carefully.

In the world of memory foam, the words “Made in China” is usually a deal-breaker for me. This is because most mattress companies that want to cut corners in terms of production costs usually have their mattresses made in China with extremely cheap –

and sometimes even harmful – raw materials. Mattresses made in the USA and Europe, on the other hand, are produced under strict quality control standards, so I typically only like to review those mattresses. However, as you will see in the next section, this company discloses enough information about their materials and quality control for me to trust that their memory foam mattresses are not harmful or made with dangerous chemicals.

Unfortunately, there is no website for the Best Price Mattress company, so I will definitely deduct some points here. I like to see that a mattress retailer has a business website separate from their vendors (like Amazon) in order to provide better customer service and informative FAQs. I will award 2.5 out of 5 points for this section.

2. Is the manufacturer listed on the CertiPUR-US site?

Yes, which means their mattresses are :

– Made without ozone depletes
– Made without PBDE flame retardants
– Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy materials
– Made without phthalates regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission
– Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality

To touch back on the point I made in the previous section, typically mattress manufacturers from China are not CertiPUR certified, and so it is completely impossible to know under what conditions their mattresses are made (and with what materials).
Oftentimes, the products can be made with chemicals that are not only irritable to humans, but harmful as well. Since the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress is CertiPUR certified however, we can rest assured that this is not the case. 5 out of 5 points here.

3. What is the actual thickness/ density of the memory foam layer?

The Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress offers a memory foam top layer thickness of 3 inches. This layer happens to be infused with charcoal powder, which is actually made from bamboo that is heated to very high temperatures. A mattress infused with charcoal is better capable of resisting mildew, odors and moisture.

As of the date of publication of this review, information concerning the memory foam layer density has not been found. Best Price Mattress does not provide that data, and since they don’t have a website, the only other way I could measure this is by cutting the memory foam layer off, weighing it, and calculating the density using a simple equation. That would unfortunately void the warranty, so I cannot do it. However, I can tell you that from laying on this mattress, it probably is around 2.5-3 lb pcf. Normally you should be looking for a memory foam layer of at least 2-4 inches with a density of 3 lb pcf or greater; while the thickness is adequate, the density is a bit on the low end. Normally I wouldn’t already discount this mattress for back sleepers, but due to the supporting layers (see below) I think this mattress will only feel comfortable for side and stomach sleepers. I award 3 out of 5 points for the top layer check.

4. What is the actual thickness of the foam in the supporting layers?

In this case we have 2 supporting foam layers. Underneath the top memory foam layer we have a 2-inch layer of Super Soft Pressure Relief Foam, which is certainly an interesting and unique strategy as typically the middle layers are medium to high density foam. The bottom layer is 5 inches thick and made with high density base foam.

Seeing that the middle layer is made of “Super Soft Pressure Relief Foam” leads me to believe the mattress will feel very soft and plush – perhaps too much so for back sleepers, who typically need a medium-firmness sleeping surface to prevent sinking and maximize comfort. On the other hand, this combination probably bodes amazingly well for side and stomach sleepers, who naturally need a softer sleeping surface than back sleepers. All of this, however, will be revealed in the next section. For now, I award 4 out of 5 points here!

In total, I have awarded 14.5 out of 20 total points for Initial Checks. Not a great start, but I am hopeful for the proceeding sections.

Feel & Firmness

To provide a more-than-adequate review of Feel & Firmness, I divide this section up into three parts. First, I sleep on the mattress for a week and take diligent notes on my overall sleeping experience (feel, firmness, how well did I sleep) and present my findings. I then take in-depth questionnaires of 50 verified purchasers of the mattress to get an aggregate understanding of how well the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress holds up in terms of feel and firmness. Lastly, I conduct three durability tests by asking even more in-depth questions of my verified purchasers who have owned the mattress > 6 months.

A perfect fit for side sleepers, too soft for back sleepers

The Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress was a bit too soft for me. As a 200 lb male who is a natural back sleeper, I normally prefer mattresses that have a medium-level firmness. Sometimes a mattress can be a bit too soft but still comfortable for me; however, in this case I think the mattress was simply too soft, especially on the edges where I felt like I was sinking lower than in the middle area. I believe this is probably due to the fact that the top and middle layers are both quite soft. This does not mean the mattress is too soft for everybody; on the contrary, I believe this mattress would be an absolutely perfect sleeping experience for side and stomach sleepers. I instantly noted a difference when laying on the mattress on my side; while I’m not a natural side sleeper, it felt much more comfortable than sleeping on my back. I would definitely rate the Best Price 10-inch as a memory foam mattress with quite a soft/plush firmness. On the other hand, if you are a back sleeper who is lightweight or prefers very soft sleeping surfaces, this mattress would probably feel great for you too. If you’re a back sleeper who is more heavyweight or prefers medium-level firmness however, this mattress will definitely feel too soft for you.

Of the 50 customers I interviewed, 30 of them thought the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress was a great fit for them. Of the remaining 20, 18 of them thought it was too soft, and 2 thought it was too firm. My rule of thumb: This is a great mattress for side and stomach sleepers, as well as back sleepers who are either lightweight or prefer really soft firmness. Otherwise, this mattress will feel too soft for you.

Durable cover, durable mattress

To test the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress in terms of durability, I carefully looked at three key factors: garment construction, surface / edge abrasion, and stain release. For all of these factors, I turned to my trustworthy 45 verified purchasers who have owned the product for more than 6 months. They are the perfect candidates to rate these factors as they have used, washed, dried, and generally observed any wear and tear of the mattress over a considerably longer period of time than I have.

Garment construction refers to how resistant the mattress is to tears at the seams, body and sleeves. The more durable a mattress is, the more resistant it is to these types of tears. Luckily, there were no mattress tears visible for any of the 45 respondents, so we’re off to a great start.

Surface / edge abrasion refers to how resistant the memory foam mattress is against wearing away when rubbed against another surface. Since the mattress will be rubbed against your skin, during washing, drying and everything in between, this is an extremely important factor to review. Again, all 45 customers reported seeing no types of surface or edge abrasions. The Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress comes with a Polyester Jacquard Cover which I assume must be quite durable and high quality.

Stain release refers to how effectively the mattress can release stains. It’s important for two reasons: durability and aesthetics. A more durable mattress typically will be able to release stubborn stains with ease, and secondly, who likes to sleep on a mattress with stains?! 10 of the 45 customers had observed spills on the mattress at some point, and for 6 of them the stains were removed easily. For the remaining 4, the stains were not able to be removed at all, so this section is a bit of a mixed bag.

We have now tested the feel, firmness, and durability of the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress; I will award 16 out of 20 points in this section.

Smell

Memory foam sleepers sometimes have a love – hate relationship with memory foam mattresses, and one of the main reasons is the “new memory foam” smell. Oftentimes when unpacking a brand new memory foam mattress that has been shipped to your home, the distinct and unique smell of memory foam will unwittingly find its way into your nostrils. This happens most of the time and is completely normal; as long as the smell is not “chemical”, all you have to do is let the mattress fill out in a well-ventilated room. Preferably, this room should also get an adequate amount of sunlight, as this will speed up the process. Normally it takes 48 hours or less for a memory foam mattress to lose its smell, so during this time you should not cover it with any sheets.

In my case, there was absolutely no memory foam smell. I was actually really surprised, as I naturally assumed that any memory foam mattress made in China (even if CertiPUR certified) would be accompanied with a heavy “new memory foam” smell. Fortunately for me, this was not the case at all! Even though I didn’t note the presence of any smells, I still let the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress air out in an unused room for 24 hours before setting it up for use. As for the verified purchasers I interviewed, most also had no issues with smell. Of the 50 who were polled, 45 noted no smell, 3 said there was a slight memory foam smell that went away within a day, and 2 thought it smelled a bit strong but went away within the week. It’s always nice to see a general trend whether good or bad, as it supports the theory that every mattress is produced under the same conditions and will generally have the same attributes. I award 20 out of 20 points in this section.

Heat Regulation

To review the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress in terms of heat regulation, I used a very similar test as in the Feel & Firmness section. During the week I slept on the mattress, I also took notes about how hot I felt throughout the night. I normally wake up 2-4 times a night, so it is quite easy to pop open my little notebook and jot down a bullet point or two every time. Afterwards I also connected with my verified purchasers to get an idea of how hot the mattress has been for them as well.

For me, the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress felt neutral to warm. On all 7 out of 7 nights I slept on the mattress and took notes, I noted feeling either neutral or warm (in a nice toasty way) and never too hot. The mattress does a good job of not sticking to you or causing unnecessary perspiration; I attribute this to the polyester jacquard cover as well as the charcoal powder-infused memory foam layer. The charcoal is supposed to prevent moisture buildup, whilst the open-cell memory foam structure allows for proper ventilation throughout the night to prevent heat buildup. All in all I was really impressed here.

The majority of respondents also noted the Best Price 10-inch Memory Foam Mattress’s great heat regulating abilities: 43 of them had no issue at all with heat buildup, claiming they either feel neutral or warm. 4 of them reported it feeling hot but not too hot, and 3 said it was too hot to get a good night’s sleep. All in all I am very impressed with the heat regulation of this mattress, which can always be a very hot topic (pun intended) for many sleepers. For heat regulation, I award 20 out of 20 points.

Value

For a good bit less than $300, you are getting a solid deal on a memory foam mattress that has

proven to be a great sleeping experience for side and stomach sleepers. While it won’t please the whole crowd since it’s a bit too soft for heavyweight and back sleepers, the Best Price 10-inch does a great job of providing a very soft feel with the added benefit of superior heat regulation and virtually no smell. I am sure that if you are looking for a mattress that fulfills the above, you will not be able to find a same (or better) quality mattress at a similar price. Some 2-inch thick mattress toppers are more expensive than the 10-inch Best Price Memory Foam Mattress, which is crazy. For value I award 20 out of 20 points.
