TIP: Open the mattress in a room that is currently unoccupied, well-ventilated and receives a good amount of sunlight per day. When mattresses are first opened out of their vacuum-sealed bags, they immediately start to expand and typically give off a “new memory foam” smell which can sometimes be quite strong and bothersome. Letting the mattress air out and expand in a ventilated room for a few days is the best way to get rid of the smell. Also, don’t sleep on it during this period of time, or place any sheets or mattress protectors over it.

Where Was The Sleep Azza Mattress Made?

All components of the Sleep Azza Mattress are made 100% in the USA. Straight from the Sleep Azza Website, the designs are produced in Brooklyn, New York, the covers in Kentucky and California, and the rest of the components in Los Angeles.

Is It Made From Safe Materials?

Absolutely, because the Sleep Azza Mattress is Certi-PUR certified, which means:certipur

            – Made without ozone depletes
            – Made without PBDE flame retardants
            – Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy materials
            – Made without phthalates regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission
            – Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality

            Thickness & Density

The Sleep Azza Mattress is a 3-layered memory foam mattress featuring proprietary dual-phase temperature-controlled gel memory foam, visco elastic memory foam, and high-density polyurethane foam. So let’s jump right in and discuss each layer step by step!
The top layer of the Sleep Azza Mattress 2 inches thick, has a low density and is made from a proprietary dual-phase temperature-controlled gel memory foam in order to provide both a comfortable surface and a temperature-regulated sleeping environment. Both the thickness and density in this case are good, and the fact that this layer utilizes a brand-new proprietary dual phase change gel is super exciting for us. Innovation and evolution is something we at Zen Sleeping love to see in the memory foam industry as there is always room for improvement. We look forward to sharing how this layer performs later on in our heat regulation tests.

The Sleep Azza Mattress’s middle layer is also 2 inches thick and made from high-density visco elastic foam. This layer serves to provide extra added support and a smooth transition from the low-density top layer to the high-density bottom layer. In that respect, this middle layer is also an added bonus for chronic back pain and arthritis/ joint pain sufferers.

The bottom layer of the Sleep Azza Mattress is 6 inches thick and made from high density base polyurethane foam. This layer is pretty standard, and provides overall structure and support to the top 2 layers, as well as prevents the mattress from caving in or experiencing indentation over time.

            Smell

It is not uncommon for memory foam products to emanate a distinct odor that can range from slightly annoying to downright bothersome. So how can an online shopper be assured that a memory foam mattress – especially one like the Sleep Azza, which is brand new to the market – will not smell?
Three words: quality, quality, and QUALITY. Before we provide our Zen Sleeping verdict on the smell with respect to the Sleep Azza Mattress, it’s important to give you a little tidbit about quality. The raw materials used to make the Sleep Azza Mattress are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certified; basically, fancy talk for “this mattress is made from very high-quality materials”! Therefore from the get-go, you can be assured that there will be very little, if any, “new memory foam smell” from a Sleep Azza Mattress. If there is any, it will most likely be a very light odor that will dissipate a few hours after unpacking and setting up the mattress.

Verdict: we at Zen Sleeping did noticed no odor whatsoever upon unpacking and setting up the Sleep Azza Mattress. Coupled with the fact that this mattress also passes the highest standards of quality control, we are confident that the vast majority of purchasers will experience no issues with smell.

            Feel & Firmness

As always, before delving into this topic we like to remind our readers that feel, firmness, and the general comfort level of any mattress differs a lot from person to person. While using weight and gender can provide logical guidelines for us to follow, there will always be 100 lb females who love super-firm mattresses and 300 lb males who can’t get enough of extremely plushy and soft surfaces.

            Feel & Firmness Test

We put the Sleep Azza Mattress through our standard Zen Sleeping Comfort tests, and here’s what we found out:

Positively and without a doubt, this is one of the most comfortable memory foam sleeping experiences for us at Zen Sleeping. Whether you are tall or short, big or small, man or woman, we firmly believe the Sleep Azza Mattress will feel comfortable for you. We tested the mattress for both back sleeping and side sleeping as well, and the results were just as good. This memory foam mattress is a high-quality experience from start to finish.

            Durability

How can you tell if a mattress will be durable and last long? Well, there are 4 main things to look for: adequate density, high-quality garment construction, resistance to surface/ edge abrasions, and stain release capabilities. In this section we dive into each of these factors.

            Density

The density of a memory foam mattress’s top layer is arguably the most important factor in determining how long it will last. Mattresses with low memory foam density will literally “give out” and start sinking in a few months to a year, so we can’t stress enough the importance of density.

The density of the Sleep Azza’s top layer of memory foam is in a perfect range, which optimizes both the experience of the sleeper and the durability of the mattress over a long period of time.

            Garment Construction

Garment construction refers to how resistant the mattress cover and actual mattress are to tearing at the sides, seams, and edges. Since this is a brand-new mattress, we will have to update this section at a later time with customers’ opinions, but for now here is what we can surely say:

The mattress cover is a hand-sewn custom hypoallergenic polyester/cotton-blend zippered cover, and just from our own professional testing and reviewing of the mattress, it seems both durable and highly resistant to tearing. It is also machine-washable.

            Surface / Edge Abrasion

A durable mattress will be more resistant to surface and edge abrasions; these basically occur from the repeated rubbing of the mattress/ cover surface to sheets, your body, etc over many nights of use. The Sleep Azza Mattress is made from high-quality materials that are resistant to surface and edge abrasions.

            Stain Release

Lastly, a mattress and cover are more durable when they are better able to release stains. Again, since this is a brand new mattress, we can’t provide customer testimonials or other data points. But – as has been said previously – the cover is very durable and made from high quality materials, so we are comfortable in assuring that it will have adequate stain-release capabilities.

Total points awarded for Durability: 18 / 20

            Heat Regulation

Memory foam mattresses are sometimes synonymous with “sleeping hot”, mainly because these days mattress manufacturers use cheaper foam materials which don’t allow proper breathability, essentially trapping a person’s body heat in the mattress while they’re sleeping. If you’ve ever tried sleeping on a memory foam mattress and woken up in a puddle of sweat in the middle of the night, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
The Sleep Azza Mattress utilizes a proprietary dual-phase temperature-controlled gel memory foam for the top layer in order to provide both a comfortable surface and a temperature-regulated sleeping environment. This means that not only will the vast majority of sleepers have no issues with regards to “sleeping hot”, but in the winter you will sleep warm and nice with the additional use of bed sheets as well.
Our own Zen Sleeping review with regard to heat regulation yielded great results; the Sleep Azza Mattress did not sleep hot or too warm at all during a week-long test. We can rest assured that any prospective users of this mattress will have 0 issues with regard to heat regulation.

Total points awarded for Heat Regulation: 20 / 20

Zen Score of the Sleep Azza Mattress

A memory foam mattress must pass a Zen Score of 70 in order to be recommended by us at Zen Sleeping. The Sleep Azza Mattress passes our benchmark with a total Zen Score of 96!

            1. Hi,
I’ve read before that you recommend a two layer mattress.
Can you explain why it is OK that this one has three. Any worry that the layers may separate? Thanks!
We have had so many bad mattresses that we don’t want to make a mistake. My wife likes firm and I like a bit softer as I feel pressure on the hips if too firm … any recommendations?
