Even for experienced mattress reviewers, it can sometimes be tricky to maneuver the minefield of mediocre mattresses when searching for a quality product. Luckily, I believe I’ve come across a mattress that I would recommend to anyone interested in purchasing their first mattress: the Resort Sleep 10-inch Luxury Memory Foam Mattress.

Purchasing your first memory foam mattress may bring back nightmares of purchasing your first car. Those of you who were lucky enough to have knowledgeable parents may not relate to this, but for the rest of us… buying a first car was a nightmare! A young and naïve 17 year old guy with 5 entire summers worth of lawn-mowing in my wallet, I walked into my first car dealership like a fish swimming straight into the mouth of a Great White. Luckily I wasn’t eaten in one bite, but I did walk out of the dealership with a car that was way too powerful, had way too many features, and was WAY too expensive.

Alright, back to 2016 (thankfully). I don’t want my readers to have the same experience when purchasing their first mattress; even when purchasing online, it is so easy to look at a price tag and a bunch of marketing hoopla and think “Hmm, well it’s expensive and has all these features… so it must be great!” Right?” …

Wrong.

For this review I purchased the Resort Sleep 10-inch Luxury Memory Foam Mattress and tested it out using our standard Zen Sleeping Scoring System. As always, I also got in touch with 50 verified purchasers of this product who have used the mattress for at least 5 months.

The Resort Sleep 10-inch Luxury Memory Foam Mattress produced in the USA by Resort Sleep and was first introduced as an Amazon exclusive deal on November 3, 2014. Their website is pretty informative and has an extensive FAQ that answers many common questions about their products. You will also find other products on their website that are not sold on Amazon.

Yes, which means their mattresses are :

3. What is the actual thickness/ density of the memory foam layer?

The top layer is 3 inches thick and made of premium, open cell memory foam.
I always recommend purchasing a memory foam mattress with a top layer of at least 3 inches, so we’re off to a good start. The density of this layer is 3lb pcf, which is not bad.

4. What is the actual thickness of the foam in the supporting layers?

There is one supporting layer, which is the base support layer. It is 7 inches thick and made with high-density foam to provide a core layer of support.

Feel & Firmness

Once opened, I placed the mattress in a room to let it open up and air out. It took roughly 24 hours for it to fully form, which is pretty standard. Also important to note here is the fact that the mattress can be placed on either a box spring or solid bed frame – I tried both and there wasn’t much of a difference.

I would classify this mattress as having medium-hard firmness. For a first time mattress buyer, it’s perfect because you have all the support you need, without feeling like you’re sinking too much into the mattress. Many first-time memory foam mattress buyers complain about feeling like their midsection sags into the bed while their legs and head stay upright; you will not have this issue at all with the Resort Sleep 10-inch.

Out of the 50 customers I interviewed, 45 of them thought it was a perfect fit for them. 3 of them thought it was too firm, and 2 thought it was too soft.

My rule of thumb: Medium-hard firm memory foam mattresses make great purchases for first-time buyers, so the Resort Sleep 10-inch definitely fits the bill.

Smell

I definitely noticed a smell upon opening the packaging that contained the mattress. It wasn’t chemical though, just the typical standard smell that comes with newly purchased memory foam. Your mileage may vary, however, as the resounding majority of customers I interviewed said there was absolutely no smell.

Tip: After opening, place the mattress in a well-ventilated room, preferably one that lets sunlight through.

Heat Regulation

I slept for a week on the Resort Sleep 10-inch Luxury Memory Foam Mattress and took notes every morning on how hot I felt the night before. All in all, there was not much heat build-up at all. It was warm most nights, but not too warm that I started sweating. Overall I thought it was great from a heat regulation standpoint, although some sleepers may find it too hot (I have a higher than average tolerance for heat).

For heat regulation, I award 17 out of 20.

This mattress is everything a first-time buyer needs. A standard 2-layered system, with one layer of at least 3 inches of 3lb pcf memory foam, and a base support layer made with HD foam. No extra quilted layers, no gel-infused foams, no convoluted HD foams, none of that. Just a standard mattress with one layer made of memory foam, and the other made of high density foam.

The simplicity of this mattress means that it will last much longer whilst providing a lot of love for people who are new to sleeping on memory foam.
