Feel & Firmness Test
We placed the Lucid 3-inch Ventilated Memory Foam Topper on top of a quite firm and uncomfortable spring mattress, and had two individuals sleep on it for a week. Our sleeping subjects were a 200 lb male, and a 150 lb female. Here are our major observations:
For both testers, the Lucid 3-inch topper was comfortable and had a soft to medium firmness. Here are some other major observations:
- No feelings of sinking through
- Topper did not feel overly gooey or doughy during sleep
- Moving around on the bed was not very easy (this is the memory foam effect), but it wasn’t any worse than other memory foam products
- Both testers noted that the topper felt comfortable in both side and stomach sleeping positions
- Topper kept moving around, wasn’t as stable on the bed as it was supposed to be
To expand on the last point – this topper seemed to be a bit “loose” on the mattress that we placed it on. We believe this could have been due to the difference in materials between the topper and the mattress. It could also have been the cover we used. To make sure you don’t have the same issue, make sure you use an appropriately sized cover (make sure it’s as snug as possible) and that the sizing of the topper and your mattress fit well.
Overall, both testers were quite satisfied with the topper.
In the second part of our feel and firmness test, we interviewed current owners of the Lucid 3-inch Ventilated Memory Foam Topper to see their level of comfort with this product. Here’s what we found out:

Durability
Durability is quite an important factor, but how can we measure it? Typically, there are 3 important factors we at Zen Sleeping prefer to consider: adequate density, high-quality garment construction, and resistance to surface/ edge abrasions. In this section, we dive into each and every one of them.
Density
A memory foam topper has to be dense enough to promote durability and last long, but not so dense that the foam gets overly gooey and uncomfortable when you’re lying on it. This gooey feeling occurs because the human body transfers heat to the memory foam, and if the foam is dense enough, it starts to become uncomfortable and gooey. This seems to happen most often with memory foam products that have a density of 4lb or more.
With a density of 3 lb per cubic foot, the Lucid 3-inch Ventilated Memory Foam Topper is within the optimum density range for durability whilst staying low enough to prevent any gooeyness.
Garment Construction
Garment construction refers to how resistant the mattress topper cover and actual mattress topper are to tearing at the sides, seams, and edges.
The Lucid 3-inch doesn’t come with a cover, but from interviews with 200 of our current owners there doesn’t seem to be any complaints at all regarding tearing.
Surface / Edge Abrasion
Surface and edge abrasions are basically when the surface of any material starts wearing away after repeated usage. Memory foam products made from low-quality materials are especially susceptible.
Again, the overwhelming majority of our interviewed owners had no complaints regarding surface / edge abrasions. Memory foam products sometimes get a bad reputation for “capturing heat”, which happens when heat from your body transfers to a badly-ventilated mattress and has nowhere to flow. This does occur, but mostly with lower-quality memory foam products, so it’s important for us to review this factor for every memory foam topper.
Before actually getting into the nitty-gritty, we do have some initial good news. The Lucid 3-inch Ventilated Memory Foam Topper contains hundreds of evenly sized and spaced ventilation holes, which serve to improve airflow and breathability of the mattress. Therefore, as long as the foam itself is high-quality, there should be no issue with regard to heat regulation.
